Meet Captain Alex

I am so excited to be your Captain for a Sailing Adventure!

I am certified by the USCG to Captain boats up to 25 tons, and I am a Registered Maine Guide.

I have been a 1st and 2nd-grade teacher, Spanish and PE teacher, and leader of the Outdoor Adventure program at Breakwater School in Portland for 30 years.

My wife and I raised our two wonderful daughters in Cape Elizabeth, where we still live not far from Great Pond and Crescent Beach.

I am conversationally fluent in Spanish and French and am a Minister of Marriage.

My Grandmother taught me how to swim off the coast of Chebeague Island, in Casco Bay when we visited her every summer growing up. Our family still has her cottage there, which is one of my very happiest places ever.

I learned how to sail around the island as a child, and have owned a number of small boats during my life in and around Casco Bay.

The Endurance is the boat we sail on these days, and it is a beautiful and well-maintained 36' Catalina Mark II, made in California, where I grew up in the 70s with my Mom, Dad, and big sister.

In addition to taking guests out on sailboat adventures, I also have a job with Ripple Effect, a non-profit organization based on Cow Island in Casco Bay. I am the Captain of Venture, driving students from the edge of the Old Port out to and from Cow Island daily. Our motto is "Leadership through Adventure."

My athletic adventures include Ultimate frisbee, bicycles, surfing, canoe trips, hiking, winter camping, backcountry snowboarding, yoga, and long walks on the beach with my sweetheart.

When we get on the boat together, I will be sure to give everyone a safety briefing and do my best to make all our guests comfortable and at ease. I am a collaborative leader who will ask for input about what you want to see and where you might like to go. I will encourage you to grab a halyard to hoist a sail if you like or feel free to kick back, hang loose, and enjoy a leisurely cruise on a comfy cushion.  We will be able to take in some of the sights in and around the harbor, cruising by favorites like Fort Gorges, Bug Light, and Portland Headlight at Fort Williams. If the tide is right and we are fortunate, we may see seals sunning themselves on rocks, Osprey nests, Bald Eagles on the wing, and perhaps even a Harbor Porpoise or two.

Looking forward to seeing you on the water!

Captain Alex
